A taste of History...

Barbados is so steep in History that it is difficult on what to recommend. Here are a few: Barbados Museum, Emancipation Statue, National Hero Square and Barbados Nation Trust.

St. Nicholas Abbey

There's no religious connection at all. The island's oldest great house (circa 1650) was named after the British owner's hometown, St. Nicholas parish near Bristol, and Bath Abbey nearby. Its stone-and-wood architecture makes it one of only three original Jacobean-style houses still standing in the Western Hemisphere. It has Dutch gables, finials of coral stone, and beautiful grounds. The first floor, fully furnished with period furniture and portraits of family members, is open to the public. Fascinating home movies, shot by the current owner's father, record Bajan life in the 1930s. The Calabash Café, in the rear, serves snacks, lunch, and afternoon tea. COST: . Weekdays 10-3:30.

St Nicholas Abbey is one of three Jacobean Plantation Great Houses left in the Americas

Sunbury Plantation House

Lovingly rebuilt after a 1995 fire destroyed everything but the thick flint-and-stone walls of this 300-year-old plantation house, Sunbury offers an elegant glimpse of the 18th and 19th centuries on a Barbadian sugar estate. Period furniture, old prints, and a collection of horse-drawn carriages have been donated to lend an air of authenticity. Luncheon is served in the back garden. www.barbadosgreathouse.com. COST: . Daily 10-5.
